What Are Fungus Gnats and Why Are They in Your Houseplants?

They’re weak fliers and often hover around the soil surface or crawl on leaves. While the adults are mostly a nuisance, it’s the larvae that cause real trouble. These translucent, worm-like creatures live in the top 2–3 inches of moist potting mix, where they feed on organic matter, root hairs, and tender young roots. In heavy infestations, they can cause wilting, yellowing leaves, and even plant death — especially in seedlings and succulents.

The root cause is almost always overwatering. Fungus gnats thrive in consistently damp soil that’s rich in decomposing organic material. They hitchhike into your home via infested potting soil, new plants, or even open windows. Once inside, a single female can lay up to 200 eggs in the soil, and the life cycle (egg → larva → pupa → adult) can complete in as little as three weeks. That’s why a small problem can explode into a full-blown infestation faster than you’d think.

How to Identify a Fungus Gnat Infestation (Before It’s Too Late)

Catching the problem early is key. Here’s what to look for:

  • Adult flies hovering near the soil surface or around drainage holes. They’re most active when you water or disturb the pot.
  • Tiny black specks on the soil surface — these are the adults resting.
  • Yellowing or wilting leaves despite regular watering. This can indicate root damage from larvae.

  • A musty smell from the soil, a sign of excessive moisture and decaying organic matter.

Step 1: Let the Soil Dry Out — Your First Line of Defence

Fungus gnat larvae cannot survive in dry soil. The simplest, most effective method is to stop overwatering. Allow the top 2–3 inches of potting mix to dry completely between waterings. For most houseplants, this means waiting until the soil feels dry to your second knuckle. For succulents and cacti, let the entire pot dry out.

How to implement this safely:

  • Use a moisture meter to take the guesswork out of watering.
  • Water from the bottom (tray method) to keep the top layer dry.
  • Remove any saucers or cachepots that hold standing water.
  • Increase air circulation with a small fan aimed at the soil surface.
