What Are Terpenes?
If you have ever crushed a mint leaf between your fingers and marvelled at the burst of fragrance, or noticed the sharp, clean scent of a eucalyptus plant on a warm windowsill, you have already met terpenes. Terpenes are a large and diverse class of organic compounds produced by plants, insects, and even some fungi. In the plant kingdom they serve as the primary building blocks of essential oils, resins, and the distinctive aromas that make each species recognisable.
Chemically speaking, terpenes are isoprene-based hydrocarbons. Every terpene molecule is assembled from five-carbon isoprene units (C5H8) linked together in various configurations. Monoterpenes consist of two isoprene units (C10H16), sesquiterpenes consist of three (C15H24), and diterpenes four (C20H32). Pinene
As the name suggests, pinene delivers the crisp, resinous scent of pine needles and conifer forests. Two structural isomers exist: alpha-pinene and beta-pinene. Myrcene

There is a nuance worth knowing. In the presence of high levels of ozone (which can infiltrate from outdoor air), some terpenes can participate in secondary reactions that produce ultrafine particles. In practice, this is rarely a concern for typical houseplant numbers in well-ventilated homes, but it underscores the importance of good airflow in rooms where many aromatic plants are grouped together.
Choosing and Caring for Terpene-Rich Plants
